Just wearing a
beautiful dress is not enough. The trick is in how you put it on yourself to
show it off in the best manner possible. The way you drape a cloth can
transform something plain into a ‘head-turning’ appearance. A course in draping
teaches you exactly how to go about it.
From the basics
of choosing and preparing a dress form for draping, one is taken through pinning,
trimming, and clipping and creating shapes using darts and tucks, adding volume
using pleats and gathers, and handling complex curves as well. This is not all.
Advanced skills teach a prospective designer how to use support elements such
as shoulder pads, under layers, and petticoats, and bias draping. This is a
necessary skill not only for fashion designers but also those of working in the
hospitality industry.
This course is
often offered in conjunction with textile designing course which trains one in
the basic techniques for making and decorating fabrics. One needs to gain an understanding
on how to create textiles to solve design problems. Besides traditional
techniques, knowledge of modern mass production methods also comes in handy.
Different
courses in draping and textile designing
stress on building various skills, along with theoretical inputs and practical
application. They include:
- Elementary ergonomics
- Textile fibers
- Color
- Composition, and
- Basic textile design for printing and weaving.
Students are also
taught:
- Dyeing techniques
- Printing methods
- Sewing techniques
- Construction of fabrics and surface design.
